About the Action Center The Sky Island Action Center grew out of a treasure trove of information on the ecological values, and threats to those values, in the Sky Island Region. Since 1991, Sky Island Alliance has been collecting, compiling, and analyzing these data through the work of staff and dedicated volunteers. The organization has made this information available to other private-sector groups, public agencies, and individuals on behalf of biodiversity conservation in the region. It also has used the results to take action: closing wildcat roads, restoring local ecosystems, protecting wildlife corridors, and advocating for the survival of wild landscapes. With the formation of the Coronado Planning Partnership in 2006, an opportunity arose to pool information across a broad spectrum of groups and institutions. The Partnership has been focused initially on the revision of the Land and Resource Management Plan for the Coronado National Forest of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. But the coalition recognizes that the Forest influences, and is influenced by, forces throughout the region. For this reason it promoted the idea of the Sky Island Action Center, to be managed by Sky Island Alliance in collaboration with other Partners. Action Center Contributors: The network of contributors to the Action Center is as diverse as the Sky Islands themselves. Research institutions, Native American organizations, rancher groups, conservation activists, community alliances—these are just a few of the participants in this regionwide information bank. |
